Childrens and Young Adult Book Authors Visit NYC Schools during AAP's Adopt-a-School

The Association of American Publishers’ annual Adopt-a-School program kicks off today with Claire Lordon, author of Lorenzo, the Pizza-Loving Lobster (Bonnier Publishing) visiting PS 14Q The Fairview School, Queens. Throughout the week, local book authors like Lordon will visit New York City’s classrooms, libraries, and auditoriums to help foster a love of books and reading in young readers.

Each year, AAP pairs authors and illustrators who write for elementary, middle schools, and high school reading levels with schools across New York City for reading events. The authors then collaborate with the school(s) to create a custom, interactive experience that may include reading from their book, answering questions, and leading discussions.

As in previous years, this year’s roster of authors includes award-winners, acclaimed artists, journalists, librarians and teachers, among others, who have published well-known and beloved books. Host of the Dear Book Nerd podcast, librarian and well-established journalist Rita Meade (@ScrewyDecimal) will be sharing her book Edward Gets Messy at PS 54: The Magnet School for Environmental Sciences, Technology and Community Wellness on (insert date when confirmed)

“The Adopt-a-School program provides kids with access to some of their favorite book authors and introduces them to new authors in ways they may not have experienced otherwise. Year after year we get great feedback from both the authors and the kids about how much they have inspired each other through the connections made during school visits. This is a truly rewarding program for AAP and our member publishers,” said Tina Jordan, Vice President at the Association of American Publishers.

The program matches AAP and Children’s Book Council (CBC) member publishers with public schools provided by the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Strategic Partnerships.
