U.S. Book Associations Send Letter to President Obama on Suppression of Free expression in Turkey
AAP is committed to defending the rights of publishers, authors and journalists wherever they are threatened, and encouraged President Obama to address free speech issues during his meeting with Turkey’s President Erdogan last weekend. In the wake of the failed coup attempt on July 15, Turkish authorities have clamped down on government critics by attempting to suppress free expression. Prominent authors have been thrown in jail and twenty-nine publishing houses have been closed, in addition to news agencies, television and radio stations, and newspapers. AAP has joined with allies in the book community - including the ABA, Authors Guild, PEN and ALA - in urging President Obama to raise this important issue.
